Umande is currently involved in a project, Realizing the Right to Total Sanitation in Nakuru Low Income Settlements, in the Kaptembwo and Rhonda settlements. In 2013, Umande was able to reach63,332residents, including 96% of the school-going children from 20 target schools, with messages of good hygiene practices and hygiene promotion campaigns, and these children have additionally begun adopting hygienic toilet use. Furthermore, Umande has helped facilitate the formation of fifteen sanitation neighbourhood committees, which are actively taking the lead in Urban Community-Led Total Sanitation (UCLTS) processes and in hygiene promotion within the project area. Since the implementation of this project, sanitation &hygiene education and practices have improved in the Kaptembwo and Rhonda settlements, as have individual and community responsibility for maintaining sanitary environments.
