As the CEO of Umande Trust, I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative impact of our work in Kenya's informal settlements. My name is Benazir Omotto, and for the past 15 years, I have dedicated my life to improving sanitation, health, and economic stability for vulnerable communities.
Umande Trust was founded in 2004 with a vision to address the dire sanitation conditions in Kenya's informal settlements. When I joined the organization, we faced immense challenges, from limited resources to skepticism from the communities we aimed to serve. However, our commitment to creating sustainable solutions kept us moving forward.
One of our most significant achievements has been the construction of bio-centres. These facilities not only provide clean and safe sanitation but also convert human waste into biogas, which is used as cooking fuel in schools and homes. This initiative has addressed sanitation issues, provided a sustainable energy source, and created economic opportunities for local communities.
Another milestone was our successful community engagement programs. By involving local residents in the planning and implementation of our projects, we fostered a sense of ownership and ensured that our solutions were tailored to meet their specific needs. This approach has been crucial in building trust and achieving long-term success.
Despite our successes, we have faced numerous challenges. Funding has always been a significant hurdle, limiting the scale and reach of our projects. Additionally, changing mindsets and behaviors around sanitation practices required persistent effort and innovative strategies. Technical issues, such as maintaining the bio-centres and ensuring consistent biogas production, also posed challenges.
However, these obstacles have only strengthened our resolve. We have learned to adapt, innovate, and persevere, always keeping the well-being of the communities at the forefront of our efforts.
Looking ahead, Umande Trust is committed to scaling our sanitation model to reach more communities. We aim to expand our bio-centres, enhance our community training programs, and improve access to clean water. Our vision is to create a network of sustainable, resilient communities across Kenya.
To achieve this, we need the support of the government, partners, and the broader community. By working together, we can amplify our impact, improve health outcomes, reduce environmental pollution, and create economic opportunities for even more people.
As I reflect on our journey, I am filled with hope and determination. The progress we have made is a testament to the power of community-driven solutions and the resilience of the people we serve. I invite you to join us in this mission, to support Umande Trust, and to be a part of the transformation we are creating.
